Nokia is the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile communications devices. They have always been the market leader, but have seen this position challenged strongly in the last five years. In response to this threat, they identified the need to create a new product innovation process.

The Approach

We agreed with key members of the team that we would follow a logical methodology to ensure that this new approach was fully supported, customer focused and delivered results.

The new approach was driven by some key strategic trends that were identified: consumer demand for compelling devices, the rapid spread of social networking and continued convergence of key technologies.

The Result

By developing a new approach which put consumers at the heart of innovation Nokia has stimulated the launch of a range of innovative devices. This has led not only to a defence of market share but an actual increase, particularly in new markets. This has been achieved against the backdrop of lower unit development costs.
